EV Infrastructure Upgrade & DC Fast Charging Installation

EV Charging Station Califormia

AIM Contracting offers national EV charger installations nationwide for all commercial sites.

As electric vehicle adoption continues to accelerate across California, our team was selected to deliver a complete electrical infrastructure upgrade supporting new high-capacity EV charging operations in the City of Anaheim. The project required the installation of a new 400 Amp, 480/277 Volt, 3-Phase electrical service designed to power dual DC fast chargers while maintaining support for the facility’s existing electrical distribution system.

The scope involved close coordination with Anaheim Public Utilities (APU), city inspectors, engineers, and utility representatives to ensure all work complied with the California Electrical Code (CEC), utility standards, and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements.

Project Overview

The project centered around expanding the property’s electrical capacity to support two new Level 3 DC Fast Charging stations using the ChargePoint Express 250 platform. The installation required a complete service upgrade, new distribution equipment, underground infrastructure, transformer integration, and utility coordination.

Our responsibilities included engineered electrical drawings, permit processing, trenching, conduit installation, switchgear installation, transformer connections, pavement restoration, and final testing and inspections.

Electrical Service Upgrade

To support the new EV charging infrastructure, a completely new 400 Amp, 480/277V electrical service was installed. The upgraded system was designed to distribute power efficiently between the new EV chargers and the facility’s existing 208V electrical distribution equipment.

Key electrical infrastructure installed included:

  • Utility-approved 400 Amp meter socket
  • New 400 Amp Main Distribution Panel (MDP)
  • 150 kVA dry-type step-down transformer
  • Feeder installation to existing 208V MDP
  • Two dedicated fused disconnect switches for EV chargers
  • Raceway and conductor systems for all charger feeders

The installation was engineered to meet utility short-circuit current ratings, outdoor environmental requirements, and long-term operational reliability standards.

Utility Coordination & Engineering

One of the most critical components of the project was utility coordination with Anaheim Public Utilities. Our team managed the preparation and submission of engineered electrical drawings for both city and utility review.

Coordination efforts included:

  • Utility transformer replacement planning
  • Service cutover scheduling
  • Inspection sequencing
  • Utility approval management
  • Compliance verification with Anaheim utility standards

The project also required integration between the new 480V utility service and the facility’s existing 208V infrastructure through the installation of a new step-down transformer system.

Underground Infrastructure & Trenching

Extensive underground electrical work was completed to support the new EV charging equipment and service routing. All trenching operations were performed in compliance with OSHA safety requirements, City of Anaheim standards, and the California Electrical Code.

Scope of underground work included:

  • Utility locating and verification
  • Trench excavation and shoring
  • Conduit installation with approved bedding
  • Warning tape placement
  • Compacted backfill installation
  • Surface restoration of asphalt and concrete areas
  • Removal and disposal of excavation debris

Daily trench safety inspections were conducted by qualified personnel to maintain OSHA compliance throughout construction activities.

EV Charger Installation

The project included installation support for two ChargePoint Express 250 Level 3 DC Fast Chargers. Our licensed electrical team completed all mounting, anchoring, conduit routing, feeder installation, and electrical terminations required for charger operation.

Each charger was provided with dedicated fused disconnect protection and integrated into the new 480V electrical distribution system to support high-speed EV charging capabilities.

Concrete & Site Restoration

Following underground installation activities, all disturbed areas were restored to match existing site conditions. Restoration work included:

  • Concrete saw-cutting and replacement
  • Asphalt patching
  • Surface finishing and curing
  • Final grading and cleanup

All restoration work was completed to City of Anaheim standards to ensure both durability and visual consistency throughout the site.

Testing, Inspection & Final Delivery

Before project completion, the electrical systems underwent insulation resistance testing, feeder verification, equipment testing, and final inspections coordinated with both the AHJ and Anaheim Public Utilities.

Our team also addressed all inspection comments and ensured the system was fully compliant prior to energization.

Project Outcome

This project successfully modernized the facility’s electrical infrastructure while creating the foundation for reliable, high-speed EV charging operations. Through careful engineering, utility coordination, and disciplined field execution, the installation was completed in accordance with stringent California electrical and safety standards.

The completed system now supports expanded EV charging capacity, improved electrical distribution reliability, and future-ready infrastructure for continued fleet and customer electrification initiatives.
